What's NEW

Great Radio
"Moments"

KISN pioneered airborne traffic reporting
In Portland beginning in 1961.

To call attention to this market exclusive,
Star Stations VP Programming, Steve
Brown purchased an "AeroCar" from its
Kelso, Washington manufacturer.  Brown
recalls promoting, "the KISN AeroCar
knows Portland traffic, because it's been
there."  <<Read Pat O'Day's comments here.>>

The above Steve Brown voiced Airwatch
Promo utilizes a cut from the Ullman
"Wonderful" jingle package, which
KISN used until Fall 1962.

Simultaneously, another AeroCar was
used by Bob Cummings in his TV show
of the era.  KISN's AeroCar was the
station's 1962 Rose Festival Parade entry.

The above "Yours Truly KISN Radio" jingles
are from PAMS Series 23.  KISN first
used this melody in 1961's PAMS Series 16
("Cool Summer Sounds").  More jingles
with this melody will be featured on this
site soon.  These and other cuts from
PAMS Series 18 & 23 hit the air in
Autumn of '62.

KISN's News Intros and Outros were
legendary.  Most were written and produced
by Star Station's VP, Steve Brown,
part of KISN's original DJ lineup in '59.

The "thunder throat" on the above KISN
Action Central News elements was Omaha's
Chick Crabtree.  This set utilized the
"What's New" theme, which allowed KISN to
Beat KEX to the punch.  Gene Autry had
been using "What's New," but not with this
sizzle at KEX's new sister station KMPC--L.A.

Meanwhile, across the river in Vancouver,
"the little engine that could" was pressing
forward with sizzle of their own.  KKEY,
like KISN, buried their Legal I.D., preferring
to identify foremost with larger Portland.
KISN was using "the News Bug," which
was a telegraph speed key...a series of
dash tones...between news stories.

Above you will hear Mighty 1150 KEY's
answer to "the News Bug."  It was a
Sweep tone oscillator over a sustained
bass note.  Also note the busy electronic
background, and this is 1962!!!

Though KKEY had Collins cart machines,
these news elements were played from
a dependable MacKenzie Repeater.
Full track tapes were recorded on the
Production Room's Ampex tape decks.
A foil strip was attached before the audio.
This "shorted" the Repeater to a stop, so
it was cued for it's next use.  The tape
resided inside a metal 3"x3" cartridge,
which was permanently housed in
6-8 slots for regular format elements.

The plug for the Quay Restraurant, was
undoubtedly a "trade-out," but with the
"KEY" pronunciation, it sounded like
the station owned the restaurant.

Notice the muffled "KKEY--Vancouver,"
followed by the restaurant plug by the
late Ralph Weagant.  Bob Van Roy delivers the brief news snippet you'll hear.

KISN's 1961 PAMS Series 16 was known as
"The Sound of The City," and "The Fun Spot."

Above, from Series 16, you'll hear a song
KISN issued on a 45 rpm record,
"Portland, My Hometown."  Note the mention
of many local landmarks.
