Bill joined KISN for 9am-Noon in early '62. He was quickly moved into AM Drive. He was an excellent 3-7pm jock before departing to become America's first "fly jock."
Western did AM Drive at TOP 40 KAYO - Seattle, and PM Drive on Portland's KGON (1520am). The big winner was Western Airlines. Later still, Bill did AM Drive on 1520 "Fabulous KIM." He is now mornings on Jones Satellite's Classic Country.

When Don Hughes left KOL 20/20 News for Oklahoma, Bill Taylor moved up to Noon-6PM. Bob Fuller joined KOL for news 6PM-Midnight.
Known for a time on-air as "Robert M. Fuller," he was a mild-mannered News guy at night. In the daytime, Bob was marketing briefcase phones to businessmen like Larry Jaffe of Jafco. AND THIS WAS IN 1968.
Maybe that's why Bob is retired and living in Hawaii now!!!

Another Portland boy, who was into the launch of KISN from the day they began broadcasting over the furniture store in Vancouver. He used to pull news copy for Wally Thornton.
KLOG-Kelso was his first radio job. His first stint as "Bwana Johnny" was in West Palm Beach, then KJR sister station WUBE in Cincinnati.
Bwana also worked at KJR, WWDJ, WFUN, and KYA. As "Dick Sims," he was the last DJ to broadcast from the KISN Corner in '76.

Drake went to L.A. to launch KHJ, and McCormick joined KOL as PD & 6-9AM in 1966. Under Dave, KOL was akin to a Drake type format, complete with Johnny Mann acapella jingles. Dave hired Dex Allen, Buffalo Burch, and Bob Watson.

Dick Novak was Portland's very first TOP 40 Disc Jockey.
Dick called his show "Rhythm Room," because he disliked the "race records" tag used by the industry.
"Open The Door Richard" was the theme that opened every Dick Novak Show, which was sponsored by "Blue Goo." It came in a 65 gallon drum. Nobody knows what Blue Goo did for sure, but Dick promised, "...save money on the handy 6-pack."
Dick reigned supreme nightly on KPOJ. While doing PM Drive at KGW in late 58 to early 59, Dick let his listeners vote on whether his newborn daughter should be named Kim.
KGW listeners approved naming her KIM NOVAK!!!

In the mid-70's, Bwana Johnny returned to KJR. This time Pat O'Day decided a good name for him was Father Duffy. The pith helmet was traded in for a Friar's robe.
God is not one to be mocked. Father Duffy was hospitalized after his vehicle was struck by a train near KJR's studios.
Bwana survived to do more great radio. Father Duffy was never heard from again.

Soon, Taylor transferred to Spokane as PD of sister-station KNEW. It was under Gary's watch that KNEW became KJRB!!!
Gary returned to KJR as PD in 1969, a reward for his wildly successful "talent development" in Spokane.

Johnny Williams joined KISN as Music Director and PM Drive in late 61. Johnny was "smooth," and added just the promo spark KISN needed.

Next: Johnny began promoting that he was "..giving away Tom Murphy." This led to great interplay between the 3-7PM shift & 7PM-1AM with T.M. Indeed, Williams did give away "Tom Murphy," which turned out to be an Irish Setter. I recall a great Johnny williams comment, "...at least one of them is paper trained."

A Program Director, a "music man," a true promoter with an eye for "show business sizzle...radio would be a lot better today if we could inject some "Pat O'Day" into it!!!

Pat got into ownership in the late 70's. First acquisition was KORL in Honolulu, where Lan Roberts was the morning man.
O'Day next tapped Robin Mitchell to help him launch KYYX in Seattle in early '77. Robin had to spend time in Hawaii 4 times over the next two years; tough duty, but somebody had to do it.

Steve West joined KJR for weekends, and worked his way up to PD and eventually Station Manager before becoming GM at KISW.
When the flurry of station sales began, Steve moved to KXRX turning them into an AOR Personality Powerhouse.
One of the guys who could make radio great again, if entrepreneurs should ever regain control.

Part of the original launch crew, Murphy "owned" nights during his entire Portland tenure.
In '64 under PD, Real Don Steele, Murphy moved to AM Drive for 6 months. The morning show was great, but nights began taking a beating.

The Weagant family owned KKEY-Vancouver into the 90's. KKEY was a great sounding TOP 40 station in the early '60s.
While in High School, Warren did a weekend shift on TOP 40 KEY. It got him nuts that everybody thought his name was WARREN WEEKEND.
He used "John Edwards" during a 1964 Morning Drive fill-in stint at KGON 1520AM. Warren was Program Director of KPAM/KPFM 1965-68, and used "John Edwards" during on-air shifts there, also.
Warren hired young talent that today are Portland's top performers.
